Details First and Second World War memorial. Erected c1920 with the names of the Fallen of the Second World War added after 1945. MATERIALS: limestone ashlar set on a concrete foundation. DESCRIPTION: the war memorial stands within a planted area approached by stone steps, above a retaining wall on the east side of Chantry Street, with a boundary wall to the south, east and north. It faces west and is situated to the south of the Grade I listed medieval church of St Mary and east of the Grade II listed Old Rectory. The memorial comprises a tall elongated Latin stone cross c3.5m high with a tapering octagonal shaft and crossarm. The shaft stands on a corniced square plinth, which rests on a two-tier stepped base, together 1.25m high. On the top tier of the base is the inscription: TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF NETHERBURY-CUM-SALWAY ASH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918. The front of the plinth is inscribed with 25 names. The east side has a recessed panel inscribed: 1939-1945/ (NAMES), with six names of the Fallen. This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register. These sources were not used in the compilation of this List entry but are added here as a guide for further reading, 7 December 2016.
