Details First World War memorial, amended following the Second World War. MATERIAL: granite. DESCRIPTION: the cross stands on a three-tiered square plinth and a single step base. The front face of the cross includes a raised cross relief and raised lettering reading '1914-1918 / IN / PROUD AND / GRATEFUL / MEMORY OF / THE MEN / OF / CHILCOMPTON / AND / DOWNSIDE / WHO GAVE THEIR / LIVES IN THE / GREAT WAR'. The names of those who died during the conflict are found on the tiers below together with the dedication 'THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE'. The names of those who died during the Second World War have been added to the south side. This List entry has been amended to add the source for War Memorials Online. This source was not used in the compilation of this List entry but is added here as a guide for further reading, 14 December 2016.
