Details SANDWELL MB BIRMINGHAM CANAL SP 08 NW Birmingham Level, Smethwick 9/11 Canal Bridge, Chance's Glassworks 21.7.78 (approx 160m west of Spon Lane South) GV II Bridge. Mid-C19. Brick with sandstone coping and iron railings. Single low segmental arch. End piers linked by broad brick band. The bridge spans Telford's New Main Line, which was built in a cutting on the Birmingham Level and was opened in 1828. It carries a roadway which formerly linked the northern part of Chance's Glassworks (qv) with buildings to the south of the canal and which passes under the adjacent railway bridge (qv).
