Details MATERIALS: Aberdeen granite. DESCRIPTION: the memorial is located in the Church of St Michael’s Cemetery Extension in Burgh By Sands. It comprises a wheel-head cross surmounting a rectangular tapered shaft. The shaft is set upon a two-tiered tapered plinth and a single-stepped base. The front face of the upper tier of the plinth is inscribed IN / MEMORY / OF THE MEN OF / THIS PARISH / WHO FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918. Below on the lower tier is THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR FREEDOM AND FOR HONOUR / THEIR EXAMPLE WILL BE / AN ABIDING INSPIRATION. The other faces are inscribed with the names of the fallen. On the back is the later inscription IN MEMORY OF THE ABOVE / WHO FELL IN WORLD WAR II / 1939 – 1945. This List entry has been amended to add the source for War Memorials Online. This source was not used in the compilation of this List entry but is added here as a guide for further reading, 17 February 2017.
