Date Added 15/10/1990 Supplementary Information Updated 29/01/2020 Type Ecclesiastical: burial ground, cemetery, graveyard; church Local Authority Dumfries And Galloway Planning Authority Dumfries And Galloway Parish Ewes NGR NY 38744 94746 Coordinates 338744, 594746 — The monument comprises the remains of a 13th century church dedicated to St Martin and the burial ground surrounding it. The church survives as turf covered footings c. 0.4m high, measuring 21m (E-W) by 10m transversely. A modern mausoleum overlies the E end. The burial ground is surrounded by a stone wall, ruinous at the NW end. It is split in two by a post and wire fence running NE-SW some 19m from the SE wall. To the SE of the fence are nineteenth century tombstones. The area to the NW is now featureless and seems not to have been disturbed by later burials. Mature trees grow along the inner side of the wall on all four sides. The plan of the church will survive at floor level. As the NW end of the burial ground was abandoned at the Reformation an undisturbed medieval cemetery probably survives there. An area 41m square, being the area delineated by the boundary walls of the burial ground, is proposed for scheduling. The walls are excluded from the scheduling.
