About
Shakespeare's Globe is a 1997 reconstruction of the 1599 open-air playhouse where Shakespeare's plays were first performed, built about 230 metres from the original site on the South Bank of the Thames. The thatched-roof timber-framed theatre uses authentic Elizabethan staging; performances run April to October with audiences standing in the 'yard' as 'groundlings'. The adjacent indoor Sam Wanamaker Playhouse runs candlelit Jacobean repertory through winter.

From the Wikipedia article
Shakespeare's Globe is a reconstruction of the Globe Theatre, an Elizabethan playhouse first built in 1599 for which William Shakespeare wrote his plays. Like the original, it is located on the south bank of the River Thames, in Southwark, London. The reconstruction was completed in 1997 and while concentrating on Shakespeare's work also hosts a variety of other theatrical productions. Part of the Globe's complex also hosts the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse for smaller, indoor productions, in a setting which also recalls the period.

It is considered quite realistic, though modern safety requirements mean that it accommodates only 1,400 spectators compared to the original theatre's 3,000. The modern Shakespeare's Globe was founded by the actor and director Sam Wanamaker, and built about 230 m from the site of the original theatre in the historic open-air style. It opened to the public in 1997, with a production of Henry V. Michelle Terry currently serves as…
