Bronze plaque with arms of Sidney, 1st Lord Herbert of Lea (1810 - 1861) Secretary of State for War "who took steps for the fortification of the Island of Inchkeith." β Erected by the Trustees of Robert Mackay Smith, Merchant in Leith. The Leith merchants urged the defence of the port of Leith for more than 25 years before the fortification of Inchkeith was eventually undertaken. Sidney Herbert was an early proponent of their cause.
