Details 125/0/10006 STOPES BROW 17-OCT-06 WAR MEMORIAL II A war memorial, undated and unaccredited. MATERIALS: White granite with copper decorations, copper statue and bronze inscriptions surrounded by granite kerb topped by cast iron railings. EXTERIOR: The war memorial consists of a tapered pedestal of white granite set on a low granite plinth surmounted by a statue of a soldier with head bowed in respectful pose with his hands resting on the butt of a vertical rifle which has its barrel resting on his foot. The pedestal is decorated with a copper ribbon which survives on the south façade only, together with a buckle and a wreath. All four faces of the pedestal contain cast bronze inscriptions with missing letters painted in black. The inscription on the south face reads `TO THE / GLORY OF GOD / AND IN / HALLOWED MEMORY / OF THE SEVENTY ONE MEN / FROM THE PARISH OF / ST JAMES LOWER DARWEN / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE / GREAT WAR / GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN / ALSO IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR / 1939-1945'. Beneath 11 names of the fallen of the Second World War have been included. The west, north and east faces contain, respectively, the names of 24, 23 and 24 fallen of the First World War. At the foot of the memorial there is a granite base surrounded by a low kerb topped by cast iron railings, some of which are topped by original cast iron pine cones. HISTORY: First World War memorial with Second World War additions set back from Stopes Brow and located adjacent to St James's Church and at the entrance to the churchyard. The memorial is undated and unaccredited. SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: This well executed First World War memorial with Second World War additions fully meets the criteria for listing for its quality of design as well as for its historic importance as a memorial
