Details SD 60 SE, 2/64 LEIGH, CHURCH STREET (south side), War Memorial near junction with Silk Street II War Memorial. 1922. By J C Prestwich. Ashlar Portland limestone. Cenotaph set on stepped stylobate in centre of memorial garden. Classical style. Plinth with re-entrant corners; bronze plaques on two sides are set in architraves under wreaths and are flanked by engaged columns with fluted shafts and palm-leaf capitals; dentilled cornice above friezes inscribed 'OUR GLORIOUS DEAD'. On the top is a stylised coffin bearing crosses and wreath. Sides have sculptured swords set between bronze pikes and frieze is inscribed with dates of both World Wars. Listing NGR: SD6584800238 This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register. These sources were not used in the compilation of this List entry but are added here as a guide for further reading, 27 January 2017.
