Details TM1645SW 642-0/1/10049 IPSWICH CHRISTCHURCH PARK World War I and II Memorial GV II First World War memorial. 1922-3. By E Adams, adapted later to include Second World War. Stone over brick core. Memorial is set on a raised platform and is of rectangular section. Plinth has a splayed step rising to a short rectangular obelisk with rolled edges. Base with wreaths to north and south, commemorative bronze plaque to west and a bronze casting attached on pedestals to east. The casting is in form of a bundle of military emblems and artefacts wrapped in a flag; articles include bandoliers of ammunition, a Mk. II Browning machine gun, a Vickers gas-operated light machine gun, spears, mace and other regalia. On top of the bundle are a soldier's personal effects: uniform, helmet, gas-mask, water bottle, camouflage webbing, satchel full of Mills bombs. To north-west is a later stone-faced wall with attached bronze plaques listing names of fallen. On top of wall is a bronze lamp with the Eternal Flame.
