Details First World War memorial, 1920. MATERIALS: limestone. DESCRIPTION: Hutton Roof War Memorial is located in the churchyard of St John’s Church, Hutton Roof, Cumbria. It is prominently situated near the churchyard wall in the south-east corner of the churchyard and visible from the main road passing by. It comprises a c.1.8-metre-high rough, natural monolith of limestone, unworked but for a relief-carved plain cross to the front and a smoothed inscription face below. The inscription panel bears the dedication and names in incised and blacked lettering. The inscription is in incised and blacked lettering and reads: ERECTED BY THE/ PARISHIONERS OF/ HUTTON ROOF/ IN MEMORY OF/ (NAMES)/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR/ THEIR KING AND COUNTRY IN/ THE CAUSE OF JUSTICE AND RIGHT/ “THEY SHALL RISE AGAIN”/ 1914 – 1918.
