Herrington is an area in the south of Sunderland, in Tyne and Wear, England, historically in County Durham. The Herringtons are split into East & Middle and West and New villages. East and Middle Herrington is now a largely residential area just off the A690. West and New Herrington are across the A19 road from East and Middle Herrington near Doxford International Business Park. In Herrington is a small burn named Herrington Burn, which is a tributary of the Lumley Park Burn, which itself is a tributary of the River Wear.

Background

History

On 1 April 1946 Herrington became a civil parish, being formed from East and Middle Herrington, West Herrington and Silksworth, on 1 April 1967 the parish was abolished and merged with Sunderland and Houghton-le-Spring. In 1961 the parish had a population of 2153.
