Details NY 56 SE BURTHOLME LANERCOST 31/57 Gateway arch west of Lanercost Priory (previously listed under Lanercost Priory) 1.4.57 I Gateway arch, originally part of the gate tower of Lanercost Priory. Early C13. Calciferous sandstone squared and coursed rubble (from the nearby Roman Wall), with red sandstone dressings. Arch and fragments of the flanking tower. Chamfered segmental arch of 3 orders, hood mould and moulded corbel stops with fragments of fan vaulting. Remains of flanking walls. Rear of arch has flanking buttresses. Rear wall of tower to right has blocked segment-headed entrance to porter's lodge. Listing NGR: NY5545263734 Legacy The contents of this record have been generated from a legacy data system.
