Details The war memorial stands on the edge of the Market Place, in the pedestrianised Square. It comprises a stone cross on a tapering shaft, standing on an octagonal plinth. The plinth is raised on a four-stepped octagonal base. The memorial is surrounded by ornate railings. The inscriptions for both the First and Second World War are inscribed on the sides of the plinth and the steps, along with the names of the men who died. The inscriptions read: IN/ GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ OUR GLORIOUS DEAD/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918 (96 NAMES) IN/ GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ OUR GLORIOUS DEAD/ WHO FELL/ IN THE WAR/ 1939 – 1945 (24 NAMES) Five additional names are inscribed, two from the Second World War, two from the Korean War and one from Iraq (1954). This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register. These sources were not used in the compilation of this List entry but are added here as a guide for further reading, 23 January 2017.
