Sherwood Forest, the remnant of an ancient royal forest proclaimed by William the Conqueror, is tied to the legend of Robin Hood, said to have sheltered with his Merry Men beneath the Major Oak. Rufford Abbey and Welbeck Abbey, once Cistercian and Premonstratensian houses, became country estates within the Dukeries, alongside Clumber Park and Thoresby Hall. Southwell Minster and the Neanderthal-occupied caves of Creswell Crags sit at the edges of this wooded Nottinghamshire corner, along with the Victorian Papplewick Pumping Station.
