Robert Burns country: Alloway to Dumfries

A trail through Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway tracing the life of Scotland's national Bard.

Robert Burns was born in Alloway in South Ayrshire, and later farmed at Ellisland Farm near Dumfries, so this trail follows him across two ends of his life. Alloway Kirk, a 16th-century church ruin, is celebrated as the setting for the witches' dance in his poem 'Tam o' Shanter'. Monuments to the poet stand at Kilmarnock, Mauchline and Failford, and the village of Tarbolton keeps strong Burns connections through its Bachelors' Club museum.
