Norman heritage of Sussex
The 1066 trail: Pevensey, Battle, Hastings.
Sussex carries the founding mythology of medieval England. William of Normandy landed at Pevensey on 28 September 1066, marched inland and defeated Harold's Saxon army at Senlac Hill, where Battle Abbey now stands. This compact two-day itinerary walks the entire trail — Pevensey Castle, the Battle of Hastings site, the abbey, and Hastings Old Town — and adds the Norman castles of Lewes and Bramber for context.
