The Elan Valley dams
Dams and reservoirs built to supply Birmingham with drinking water, in the valley west of Rhayader, Powys.
The Elan Valley Reservoirs are a chain of man-made lakes formed by damming the Elan and Claerwen rivers, built by the Birmingham Corporation Water Department to supply drinking water to Birmingham and the West Midlands. Craig Goch Dam, the uppermost of the chain and known as the Top dam, was built between 1897 and 1904, while Claerwen Reservoir and its dam were the system's last addition. Elan Village, designed by architect Herbert Tudor Buckland to house the workers, sits alongside Caban-côch Reservoir, the River Elan, and the nearby market town of Rhayader.
