Britain's great aqueducts
Pontcysyllte, Lune, Marple, Avoncliff — the cast-iron triumphs of canal-building.
Aqueducts that fly canals over rivers and valleys are the most spectacular set-pieces of British canal engineering. Pontcysyllte (1805, Telford and Jessop) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Lune (Rennie, 1797) is the longest masonry aqueduct in England; Marple (Outram, 1800) is a triple-bore stone wonder.
