Details First World War memorial erected in the 1920s. MATERIALS: marble cross on a stone base. PLAN: the memorial is located in the centre of the cemetery. It is square on plan. DESCRIPTION: the memorial consists of a wheel cross on a high, tapering plinth, resting on a marble base, which in turn stands on a triple-stepped stone base with low corner posts. In the centre of the cross is carved ‘HIS’, and around the wheel is a Latin inscription ‘Pro deo et patria’. The horizontal arms of the cross bear the dates ‘1914’ and ‘1919’, and the bottom of the cross shaft is inscribed ‘To the dear memory of our fallen’. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the plinth, and on the marble base are the words ‘Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God.’ On the side of the plinth the date ‘1939-1945’ has been added, along with the names of the fallen from the Second World War. All the inscriptions are in flush lead lettering. This List entry has been amended to add the source for War Memorials Online.
