Details A war memorial, dating from 1920, commemorating the Fallen of both the First and Second World Wars, by Arthur Hall of Monmouth. MATERIALS The memorial is sculpted from local Buckholt sandstone. DESCRIPTION A plain Latin cross, circa 6m high, which has chamfers to the arms, and tapers slightly from the head to the base. It is set directly into the square base, which has depressed fields to two sides. One field is inscribed in black lettering: TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 / THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS OF / WELSH NEWTON AND LLANROTHAL. / RIP / followed by the names of the three men who were killed. The other field is similarly inscribed IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS / PARISH WHO FELL IN THE WORLD WAR / 1939 – 1945 / followed by the names of the four men who died in that conflict. The base is set on a platform of two steps. The memorial was cleaned with the help of a grant from the War Memorials Trust in 2010.
