Details A memorial gateway commemorating the people of Chudliegh Knighton who died in the First World War. MATERIAL: an ashlar and rough-hewn granite memorial with a metal gate. DESCRIPTION: the memorial gateway is constructed of ashlar stone gate piers with rubble infill, topped by a three tiered rough-hewn granite lintel, surmounted by a wheel cross. Within the gateway is a metal gate with fleur-de-lis railheads. On the outer face of the lintel's bottom tier is a dedication in raised black lettering that reads, βTO THE GLORY OF GOD/ IN MEMORY/ OF THE MEN WHO DIES IN THE / GREAT WAR 1914-1918'. The names of those who died are written below. This List entry has been amended to add the source for War Memorials Online. This source was not used in the compilation of this List entry but is added here as a guide for further reading, 8 December 2016.
