Details DORCHESTER SU5793, SU5794, SU59SE 8/29, 5/29, 3/29 The Bridge and Causeway 18/07/63 GV II* Bridge and causeway. 1814-16 by Francis Sandys. Limestone ashlar and coursed squared rubble. Central portion of the bridge is in ashlar with a segmental arch, cornice and balustraded parapet between wide piers; flanking rubble sections each have 2 smaller arches, and the plain band and rubble parapet continue along the causeways. The western causeway sweeps round towards the north, with square ashlar piers terminating the outward curving parapets, and has a small arch halfway along. The eastern causeway is straight, the parapet curves outwards only on the south, and there is a small arch at the eastern end. The inner faces of the main piers have recessed stone seats.
