It is about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) south of the fishing port of Padstow and 11 miles (18 km) northeast of the coastal resort of Newquay. The village has a primary school (St Merryn School, part of Kernow Learning), a veterinary practice, various shops, restaurants, and two public houses. The population at the 2011 census was 1,692.
