Details MATERIALS: Portland stone. DESCRIPTION: Quedgeley War Memorial is located inside the S gate of St James’ churchyard. It consist of a hooded Calvary cross on a tapering octagonal shaft. The shaft is set upon a chamfered square plinth on a four-stepped square base. The front face of the plinth is inscribed: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS/ FRIENDS.” ST JOHN XV.V.13. The rear face of the plinth reads “PRECIOUS IN THE SIGHT OF THE LORD/ IS THE DEATH OF HIS SAINTS.”/ PS.116.15.V. The front face of the steps are incised with the names of the fallen from the First World War. The side face of the top step carries a later dedication to the fallen of the Second World War: ALSO IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL IN/ THE SECOND WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945. The names of the fallen are listed on the side face of the second step.
