Details A churchyard war memorial of c. 1920 and after 1945. MATERIALS & PLAN: the monument takes the form of a plain ashlar cross with square base and stepped plinth which is placed to the south east of the church and adjacent the churchyard wall, over which it can be clearly seen from the road. The plain body of the Latin cross is without ornament. It rises from a square base which is inscribed to its eastern side: ‘IN MEMORY OF / THE VALIANT MEN OF THIS PARISH / WHO FELL IN THE / SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY / DURING THE GREAT WAR. / 1914 – 1918 / “DO THOU FOR ENGLAND LIVE: / WE FOR ENGLAND DIED”. Names of the fallen are inscribed on the flanks. On the western side is inscribed: ‘ALSO THE SECOND WORLD WAR / 1939 – 1945’ with names of the fallen, below which is “AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN / THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM”. This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register. These sources were not used in the compilation of this List entry but are added here as a guide for further reading, 23 November 2017.
