Details GREAT AMWELL ST JOHNS LANE TL 3712 (north side) Great Amwell village 12/9 Monument to The New River on smaller island 4.12.51 below the church GV II Monument to the New River. 1818 in the form of a square stone pedestal on a chamfered base with ball finial. Inscribed on the upstream face: 'Amwell! perpetual be thy stream,/Nor e'er thy spring be less,/Which thousands drink, who never dream,/Whence flows the boon they bless./Too often thus ungrateful man/Blind and unconscious lives,/Enjoys kind Heav'ns indulgent plan,/Nor thinks of him who gives./Archdeacon NARES 1818.' The lines are said to have been composed by Archdeacon Nares. A neo-classical monument. Part of a group in a landscaped setting of great beauty. (Harvey (1896) 121: Pevsner (1977) 149).
