Category B Date Added 04/10/1988 Local Authority Dumfries And Galloway Planning Authority Dumfries And Galloway Parish Gretna NGR NY 29418 67048 Coordinates 329418, 567048 — 1750's, bridge contracted for by John Kennedy and James Forrest; 2 segmental arches (one flood relief) over Kirtle Water. Widened to S in 20th century, retaining profile. Red Ashlar, mostly diagonally droved; recessed arch-rings, graded voussoirs at N; addition in concrete with ashlar facing. Pointed cutwater either side (original) N cutwater splayed inwards below parapet. Abutments and parapets splayed on plan; shallow ramped parapets with band courses, square terminal piers with pyramidal caps. — Commissioners meeting 1.6.1749 propose bridge to be built the following year; payment for bridge in 1759 accouts; spans each approx 15m. One arch fell in 1787. (Commissioners of Supply minutes).
