Heritage listing
Date Added 18/08/1882 Last Date Amended 29/05/2018 Type Ecclesiastical: church Local Authority Dumfries And Galloway Parish Stoneykirk NGR NX 08017 48389 Coordinates 208017, 548389 β The monument consists of the site of the medieval church of Kirkmadrine. Carved stones from the site demonstrate that it was an important ecclesiastical centre, probably a monastery, as early as the 6th century AD. It continued in use as a parish church until around 1618. The site of the church is a prominent mound on which was built the MacTaggarts of Ardwell mausoleum. The scheduled area is irregular on plan, to include the remains described above and an area around them within which evidence relating to the monument s construction, use and abandonment is expected to survive, as shown in red on the accompanying map. The scheduling specifically excludes the above ground elements of the 19th century mausoleum, all gravestones, the MacTaggart Memorial and the churchyard wall.
