Hurworth House School was a non-selective independent school located in Hurworth-on-Tees, in the borough of Darlington, England. There were approximately 130 pupils on the school roll, aged 4–16, as of July 2010. On Tuesday 29 June 2010 it was announced that Polam Hall proposals had fallen through and that Hurworth House was to close for good. The site of the school is now home to a special educational school of the same name, which opened in 2011.

Background
History
Hurworth House School was founded in 1946 as a private preparatory boarding school for boys. It was founded by Lorimer Thomas as a boys school. For the first fifty years of its history, Hurworth House established and maintained an enviable reputation for preparing boys for Common Entrance into public school. In 1994, however, the Governing Board took the decision to extend the age range of the school to 18 and to offer the full range of GCSE and, with sister school Polam Hall, AS and A- Level subjects to the boys in its care. This decision arose essentially at the instigation of many parents who wanted the outstanding education that their sons had thus far enjoyed up to the age of thirteen…
