Main block rectangular-plan, 3 storeys with loft and sunk basement, built against slope above River Esk. 2 adjoining parallel low ranges abut S flank at upper level of slope; low gabled ranges adjoin either main gable; modern lean-to at NE. Rubble-built with ashlar dressings (original work with grey ashlar, later work red). Slated roofs. Main block has principal door off-centre on W gable, single central opening at each level above pulley wheel at 1st floor; 4-bay long N elevation. Most openings with small-paned glazing. Ranges to S probably contained kiln formerly, and heightened, large rectangular slapping and some brick rebuilding in twin-gabled S elevation, main roof swept at W over similar slapping and modern sliding door. Interior is remarkably complete, machinery constructed mostly of timber and iron; waterwheel below basement level; fireproof iron doors. Caul 200 yards upstream, lade runs underground through rock-hewn tunnel for most of its length. — Category A for completeness of machinery. B group with Hollows mill farm steading (Item 19). NSA report (1836) describes mill as "lately erected". SRO GD 224/522/3/10 includes minutes of the Canonbie Mill Committee (may refer to previous mill, to S of parish churchyard).
