Details SO 8408-8508 PITCHCOMBE A4173 (east side) 9/186 Group of 9 monuments in the churchyard adjacent to south side of nave and chancel to Church of St John the Baptist GV II* Four pedestal tombs, 3 chest tombs, one 'tea caddy' and one sarcophagus. Early C18 to mid C19. Limestone and sandstone. Described in rows running from north to south and from west to east. Pedestal tomb. Mid C18. Limestone. Rectangular with finely carved gadrooned ends, west with 2 cherubs' heads, open book and fronds to east. Cavetto moulded top and base. Inscriptions illegible. Chest tomb. Dated 1747. Limestone. Rectangular with corner pilasters, west end having trophy with Serpent of Eternity and hour-glass, cartouche with cherub's head over to east. Bolection moulded side panels with carved flanking panels. Hollow moulded top and cyma base. Inscribed to EDWARD PALLING, died 1747. Chest tomb. Dated 1707. Limestone. Lyre ended with boldly carved swirls to surrounds of side panels. Rectangular end panels. Inscribed to children of Palling family. Pedestal tomb. Dated 1777. Limestone. Rectangular with carved and gadrooned rounded ends, west especially good with sarcophagus and 2 cherubs' heads. Wreathed side panels with egg and dart surround. Enriched cornice top and cyma moulded plinth. Inscribed to THOMAS PALLING, CLOTHIER, died 1777. Chest tomb. Dated 177-. Limestone, one sandstone panel. Rectangular with corner pilasters, west end having panel with open book and fronds. Inscriptions illegible. Pedestal tomb. Mid-late C18. Limestone. Rectangular with rounded corners. Recessed end panels with relief carving, west with Tree of Life, east with urn and fronds. Raised circular side panel with egg and dart border. Hollow moulded top, moulded plinth. Inscriptions illegible. Pedestal tomb. Late C18. L
