By 1683, stones were being quarried for work to begin. Only in the next century when it seemed that the Leven might be bridged further north, thus isolating Dumbarton, was this present structure built. Shortly after building was completed, one pier failed, bringing down 2 arches, but repairs were completed by 1768. Advert in the NORTH BRITISH ADVERTISER 9.9.1843 invites tenders for " .... widening the roadway and erecting footpaths on the bridge in wrought and cast iron ......" It is not clear whether this work was done.
