Built 1765; widened, with iron cantilevers, 1884, W R Copeland of Glasgow, engineer; ironwork repaired and concrete balustrade added 1933-4, Mr Jeffrey of Dumbarton, engineer. 5 segmental arches over River Leven; rounded cutwaters to both faces, continued to full height as buttresses. Ashlar; voussoirs carried into spandrels as diagonal masonry. — Category B only because of alterations. RHP 3493 in SRO is a drawing for a proposed bridge at Dumbarton, dated 1684. By 1683, stones were being quarried for work to begin. Only in the next century when it seemed that the Leven might be bridged further north, thus isolating Dumbarton, was this present structure built. Shortly after building was completed, one pier failed, bringing down 2 arches, but repairs were completed by 1768. Advert in the NORTH BRITISH ADVERTISER 9.9.1843 invites tenders for " .... widening the roadway and erecting footpaths on the bridge in wrought and cast iron ......" It is not clear whether this work was done.
