Details 1385/0/10012 12-NOV-02 COMPTON BASSETT War Memorial II Second World War memorial. Erected 1950. Portland stone. Plain octagonal base with pedestal surmounted by tall Latin cross with a sword or cross carved on the front. Inscribed on the pedestal are the names of servicemen killed in the First and Second World Wars and a verse attributed to Capt. Fielding Johnson, one of the principal benefactors, who lost his only son and step-son in the Second World War. This is an uncommon example of a Second World War memorial. This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register. These sources were not used in the compilation of this List entry but are added here as a guide for further reading, 16 December 2016.
