Details A war memorial cross of 1920 date. MATERIALS: of coarsely dressed stone. DESCRIPTION: the war memorial is a cross on a square base and sloping square plinth with recessed panels to each face. The tapering square shaft is surmounted by a square wheel cross. The front (S) face of the plinth reads TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF THE/ EIGHT PARISHIONERS WHO/ FELL, AND OF THE FORTY FIVE/ WHO, FROM THIS PARISH,/ SERVED IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919. The base below is inscribed THIS CROSS IS THE GIFT OF THE PEOPLE/ OF COMBE FLOREY, 1920. The E face of the plinth is inscribed with names of the fallen and their place and date of death. The N face reads “IF OUR TIME BE COME, LET/ US DIE MANFULLY FOR OUR/ BRETHREN AND LET US NOT/ STAIN OUR HONOUR./ MACC. IX.10/ 1939 - 1945/ (NAMES). This List entry has been amended to add the source for War Memorials Online. This source was not used in the compilation of this List entry but is added here as a guide for further reading, 23 November 2017.
