Heritage listing
Date Added 21/12/2000 Type Secular: castle Local Authority Perth And Kinross Parish Fortingall NGR NN 67709 47891 Coordinates 267709, 747891 — The monument comprises the remains of Carnbane Castle, which is situated on a steep-sided spur above the River Lyon, commanding extensive views up and down the Glen. The spur is cut off from the rest of the river terrace by a deep ditch cut across its neck. Immediately behind this rises the wall of the hall-house, surviving in places up to about 5m in height. Architectural features such as arrow slits and gun loops are preserved within the fabric, and there are traces of a SW corner tower. The area of the spur beyond (S of) the main building is defended by a wall now reduced to no more than 50cm in height. There is a narrow terrace just below the top of the spur, which probably represents the remains of a shallow ditch. The castle in its present form probably dates from the 16th century. The area to be scheduled measures a maximum of 65m N-S by a maximum of 40m E-W, to include the visible remains of the castle and an area around it in which traces of activity associated with its use may survive, as marked in red on the attached map.
