Heritage listing

Details Brinsworth and Canklow War Memorial is located within the churchyard of St George’s Church and it consists of a stone Latin cross rising from a square shaft. The head of the cross is carved with knotwork detailing. The moulded base of the shaft has a scroll detail on either side. The memorial stands upon a rectangular plinth on a two-stepped base. The shaft of the cross is inscribed β€œLEST/ WE/ FORGET”. The front and rear are inscribed with the names of the fallen, and to either side of the names on the front face is ornately carved 1914 and 1918. Two plaques have been added at a later date. The first is fixed to the front face of the top step and reads: TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN EVER GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF BRINSWORTH & CANKLOW WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ β€œTHEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE”. Below this is an angled plaque with the names of the fallen from the Second World War. The plaque is inscribed 1939 and 1945 in the same style as that of the First World War. The memorial is on a raised platform and is surrounded by posts and a chain link fence.
