Heritage listing
Category C Date Added 14/12/1970 Local Authority Edinburgh Planning Authority Edinburgh Burgh Edinburgh NGR NT 24508 71568 Coordinates 324508, 671568 β Slab of coarse red freestone, badly weathered, placed on stugged ashlar gate pier at NW end of boundary wall to Morningisde Parish Church in 1852. Metal plaque with inscription : 'The bore stone in which the Royal Standard was last pitched for the muster of the Scottish Army on the Borough Muir before the Battle of Flodden 1513 It long lay in the adjoining field, was then built into the wall near this spot and finally placed here by Sir John Stuart Forbes of Pitsligo, Bart. 1852' followed by a quote from Sir Walter Scott's poem 'Marmion'. β The Stone's traditional attribution has been proven incorrect as James IV set out from Edinburgh before the standards were ready.
