Details First and Second World War Memorial. MATERIAL: granite. DESCRIPTION: the memorial has a flat base surmounted by a tapering plinth, and a Celtic–style wheel cross. The plinth contains recessed panels. The front panel included lettering which reads-‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND THE IMMORTAL/ MEMORY OF THE BRAVE MEN OF/ BISHOPSTEIGNTON/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS’. The two side panels include the names of those who died, ordered by the date of their passing. In a well space in front of the base is a stone plaque that commemorates those who died during the Second World War, with lettering that reads-‘ALSO TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE/ WHO FELL IN THE SECOND WOLD WAR 1938-45’, with the names of the fallen set out below. This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register. These sources were not used in the compilation of this List entry but are added here as a guide for further reading, 27 February 2018.
