Details ASHPRINGTON SX85NW Stancombe Linhays 6/13 Base Immediately West of the Durant Arms Public House GV II War memorial erected on an ancient cross base. Probably late medieval cress base; it is octagonal on plan, built of stone rubble with a dressed stone cornice, on top of which is the dressed granite 1914-18 War Memorial in the form of a medieval cross with an octagonal shaft with pyramid steps and short octagonal arms, set in a square socket stone with a lead inlaid inscription. The whole structure is situated on a raised grassed island with a stone rubble retaining wall in the village centre. The stump of the original cross shaft and socket stone (qv) are now in the churchyard south of the church. Listing NGR: SX8186657086 This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register. These sources were not used in the compilation of this List entry but are added here as a guide for further reading, 8 December 2016.
