Details A war memorial dedicated and unveiled in March 1920. MATERIAL and PLAN: the memorial is of limestone with slate plaques attached to all sides. It is placed on a raised bank to the west side of the B5477, Shrewsbury Road. It takes the form of an obelisk on a pedestal with stepped, square plinth. The obelisk is of ashlar, and rises from the plinth, which has a cap with a deep cavetto moulding to its top, supporting miniature pediments to each face. The plinth has green slate plaques to the north, east and south fronts. The eastern one bears the inscription ‘To the Glory of God / and in the memory of those / from this parish who fell / in the Great War 1914 – 1918 / for Truth Righteousness and Justice’. Names of the fallen are inscribed below and on the panels on the flanks. A small plaque was placed on the east face of the obelisk, which records the names of those who died in the Second World War. A larger plaque, recording the same names is set in the upper step of the plinth. This List entry has been amended to add the source for War Memorials Online. This source was not used in the compilation of this List entry but is added here as a guide for further reading, 19 January 2017.
