Details FARNBOROUGH ROAD 1. 5238 Farnborough Abbey Church of St Michael (Formerly listed as Roman Catholic Church of St Michael) SU 8756 4/24 28.1.59 I 2. 1886-87. By G H A Destailleur. Built for the Empress Eugenie as a memorial to her husband Napoleon III, the crypt serving as a mausoleum, to house the remains of Napoleon III, the Prince Imperial, and the Empress Eugenie in granite sarcophagi. Late French Gothic in style, comprising an aisless nave, short transepts and apsidal east end, the crossing being surmounted by an octagonal tower, with copper dome capped by a lead covered domed turret. Fine ashlar stone walling, pinnacled buttresses, elaborate traceried parapet, projecting gargoyles. Central doorway is flanked by butresses rising to pinnacles with a circular window above with Flamboyant tracery, ending with a traceried panel. The east end has flying buttresses.
