The Derwent Valley Mills

The birthplace of the modern factory system, strung along the River Derwent in Derbyshire.

Derwent Valley Mills, a World Heritage Site since 2001, marks where the modern factory system was born in the 18th century. Cromford Mill, developed by Richard Arkwright in 1771, was the world's first water-powered cotton spinning mill, and Strutt's North Mill in Belper, built by the Strutt family, forms another anchor of the site. Cromford village, first recorded in the 11th-century Domesday Book, and the town of Belper, with its River Gardens park, sit alongside the Cromford Canal, St Mary's Church and the Midland Main Line's Milford Tunnel.
