Thomas Telford (1757–1834) was the engineer who linked Britain together. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, the Menai Suspension Bridge, the Caledonian Canal, the Holyhead Road and around 1,000 bridges and 1,000 miles of road are his work. He was the first president of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
